3 Biggest sins in Islam according to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W)

Human being tends to do mistakes and commit sins in day to day life. It is the mercy of Allah, the almighty, that Allah forgives us on seeking repentance and doing good deeds.

General types of sins in Islam

In general, the sins are categorised in two major categories, Saghira (small) and Kabira (big) sins. They are also known as Minor and Major sins.

Saghira sins are the sins that usually a human commit in most of the time. Allah forgives easily these minor sins on seeking repentance or doing good deeds. Kabira sins are the big sins for which there is a lot of punishment. The impact of Kabira sin is much higher and repentance is a must for this.

3 biggest sins in Islam

Narrated Abu Bakra:

The Prophet (ï·º) said thrice, Should I inform you out the greatest of the great sins? They said, Yes, O Allah's Apostle! He said, To join others in worship with Allah and to be undutiful to one's parents. The Prophet (ï·º) then sat up after he had been reclining (on a pillow) and said, And I warn you against giving a false witness, and he kept on saying that warning till we thought he would not stop.

- [Sahih al-Bukhari 2654]

So according to beloved Prophet Muahmmad  (ï·º), the three biggest sins are:

  • To associate a partner with Allah (Shirk)
  • To disobey the parents
  • To give false testimony
If a person commits Shirk, means if he associated a partner with Allah, then his all good deeds will go in vain, and if  he dies in that state, then Allah will never forgive that person, and whoever prays for such a person will also fall outside the realm of Islam.

Thus Shirk is the biggest and most hated sin in the sight of Allah. We must always prevent ourselves from this major sin.

"If they were to join other gods with Allah, all the good deeds that they did will be vain for them."
- [Surah 6 al-An'am, verse 88]

Second major sin is common in our society. Status of parents is very high in Islam. It is obligatory for every Muslim to show the unconditional kindness, respect, and obedience to their parents.  Islam teach us to respect our parents and fulfill their rights.

For your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And honour your parents. If one or both of them reach old age in your care, never say to them [even] 'ugh', nor yell at them. Rather, address them respectfully.

- [Surah Al-Isra, verse 23]

"Ugh" is the minimum rate of bad sayings, which means that whatever is worse than saying "ugh" is prohibited too. Also the word doesn't indicate itself only, showing disgust, weariness, and boredom toward our parents are also included as well. Thus we must always respect our parents anyhow in any condition.

The third, giving false testimony, is also one of the biggest major sin because Islam is a religion in which justice plays a major role. Injustice is not tolerable or acceptable in Islam.

It was narrated that Khuraim bin Fatik Al-Asadi said that : The Prophet (ï·º) prayed the Morning prayer, and when he had finished, he stood up and said: "Bearing false witness is equivalent to associating others with Allah," three times. Then he recited this Verse: "And shun lying speech (false statements), Hunafa' Lillah (i.e., worshiping none but Allah), not associating partners (in worship) to Him."

 - [Sunan Ibn Majah Hadith No. 2372]

We must prevent ourselves from these three major sins mentioned by Prophet (ï·º). There are many major sins besides the three mentioned above.

We should never be disappointed by our false deeds because Allah is ever forgiving and most merciful. All the sins we ever had committed will surely be forgiven if we seek repentance from Allah. May Allah forgive us and guide us to right path.
