Greatness of Quran | Virtues and comparison with other Books

Introduction to Quran

The holy Qur'an is the last book revealed to the last Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (ﷺ). The meaning of word "Qur'an" is to read in large measure. This name is given to the Book because it is so worthy that people should read it regularly.

Greatness of Quran

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًۭى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

"This is the book, there is no doubt on it, is a guide to those who (guard against evil) fear Allah."

[Al Baqrah:2]

There is no book like the Qur'an in the world. If anyone has slight doubt regarding this claim, he has been challenged to present such a book. Even Qur'an says, "And if you are in doubt about the Book which we have revealed to our slave, then produce a surah like this and call all your supporters, besides Allah, if you are truthful." [Al Baqrah:23]

Virtues of Quran

The first virtue of Qur'an is that it is a Revealed Book and it is present in its pure form. Some books, which are considered to be revealed like the Holy Bible, cannot be treated as Revealed in the present form, this is because the original text of the Book is lost.

Present day Bible is compiled from memories of certain people and in this also Many changes have been made from time to time. However, contrary to this, the Holy Qur'an is safe from such interpolations and it remains the same as it was revealed. And it will remain protected because Allah has taken the responsibility of protecting it. Its memorization and recitation during month of Ramadan by thousands of people is the guarantee and practical proof of it.

The second virtue of Qur'an is that it is a master key that gives solution to all human problems whether they are personal, social, national, international, political or economic. It not only gives the solution, but also provides best guidance on all matters.

"Surely this Quran guides to what is most upright, and gives good news to the believers who do good that they will have a mighty reward."
[Al-Isra:9]

Therefore, under the shadow of holy Qur'an prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions (R) brought about an all embracing, revolution of virtue and gave a practical example to the world. No other Book in the history of the world has brought such a unique revolution.

The third virtue of Qur'an is that it has tremendous efficacy. One, who listens to its message with an open mind and ponders upon it, does not remain untouched. Acceptance of the truth by King Najjashi and embracing Islam by Umar, Tufail Ibn Amr Dausi, Abuzar Ghifari and others are it's clear proof. The Qur'an changed them completely.

The fourth virtue of the Qur'an is that it distinguishes truth from falsehood and differentiates between good and bad. Therefore, it also called Al Furqan. Qur'an to his slave says, "Blessed is he who sent down the criterion (Qur'an) to his slave that it may be an admonition to all creatures." [Al Furqan:1]

The Qur'an is a book that not only distinguishes, but also possess a criterion of truth. This means that whatever has been said in other books, if the Qur'an confirm it ,then only is correct. If that is contrary to the Qur'an, it would be discarded as wrong. And for this very reason the Qur'an is called MUHAIMIN (guard).

The fifth virtue of Qur'an is that word of Allah. There is no parallel to it in it's language and expression. The language of the Qur'an is Arabic, which is a living language. There is no parallel to the opportunity sweetness, richness, eloquence and simplicity of expression and style of the Qur'an.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "The superiority of Allah's words over all other words is like Allah's superiority over His creatures." [Tirmizi]. Not a sentence rather even a word in the entire Book is below standard. From the beginning to the end it's like collection of appropriate words, expression and style.

Quran and the other Books

  • Qur'an is protected and preserved and will remain so forever. Allah has taken upon Himself, the responsibility of preserving it. Other books have not been preserved. They have undergone many changes.
  • The Qur'an is in Arabic which is living language. The language in which other Books were revealed are dead languages now.
  • The Qur'an is a universal book. The guidance and commandments are worth following in all areas of the world and in all eras. The other books were revealed for the guidance of particular people in particular regions. Thus they cannot provide guidance to all people all time.
  • The Qur'an is absolutely comprehensive in it's content. It gives guidance in all aspects of faith, all Matter of human interaction, morality and manners. The other Books were not as comprehensive in their content. Some of them only dealt with morals and some others were only simple compilation of hymns and invocations, whereas still others only dealt with regulations.
  • The teaching of Qur'an appeal to the wisdom and conscience and are in conformity with nature. There is not a single statement or teaching which has been proved wrong by any rational argument or experience, whereas the other books are loaded with contradiction due to human meddling in their texts and are contrary to matter of fact.

This distinction and virtues of the Qur'an make it distinguished and excellent in comparison to other books. Therefore, every human being should make the Qur'an as its helmsman.
