Rights of Quran

Objective of Quran's revelation

The Holy Qur'an is a prescription of alchemy, which is revealed for showing the right path to human beings, for purifying them and for making them aware of the consequences of defiance to Allah.

"And we revealed a book to you which clarifies everything, is a grace and blessing for those who bowed their heads in acceptance."

[An Nahl:89]

Rights of Quran

To achieve the purpose for which Qur'an has been revealed, it is necessary that it must be read, it must be understood, it must be followed in practice, and the people who are away and deprived of it, it must be conveyed to them.

There are four requirements which are called the rights of Qur'an:

  1. Tilawah (Recitation of the Qur'an)
  2. Tadabbur (Deliberation)
  3. Following the Qur'an in practice
  4. Preaching of the Qur'an

Tilawah

The Qur'an is the Holy book hence just reading of it makes impression to particular and delighten his soul it should be read in regular manner. It doesn't mean that we should not understand it by meaning but one should have the habit of reading it on daily basis. The first ayah which was revealed also teach us the same.

"Read, (O Prophet) in the Name of your Lord Who created"

[Al-Alaq:1]

Tadabbur

Tilawah of the Qur'an is not merely meant for pronouncing words by tongue. The purpose is to understand the devine message. People who recites surah without understanding may ponder over statment of prophet Muhammad (ï·º):"one who completes entire Qur'an within less than three days will understand Nothing." [TIRMIZI]

So to say, more than mere reading understanding is to be attempted. It is very unfair that the Qur'an is read by people and they do not try to understand it, whereas no other book lays so much emphasis on understanding and deliberation. Unless one understand it, the Qur'an cannot benefit in it's real sense. Hence Abdullah Ibn Abbas R used to say, "I perceive reading short chapters like suratul Qariah and suratul Qadr with comprehensive to be much better than reading extensive chapters like suratul Baqrah and Aal Imran with flow and would understand Nothing."

Acting upon the Qura'n

A doctor prescribes remedy to the patient and the patient knows what has been prescribed, if he does not use the medicine, then he cannot be cured. In the same way, if a man reads the Qur'an and also understand it but does not practically carry out the instructions given in it Qur'an shall not benefit him. Hence, only understanding the Qur'an is not enough, to act upon it is also essential.

Such was the statement of companions of prophet Muhammad (ï·º) that as soon as a command came, without the slightest hesitation, they would instantly begin to practice it. Changing of qibla was commanded during the congregation of Salah itself and they turned about in the state of Salah and changed Qibla.

Preaching of Quran

The Qur'an is not meant to scholars and Muslims alone. It is a book of guidence for all human being. So it is imperative that it should be conveyed to all human beings. Hence prophet Muhammad (ï·º) has ordained thus:"O Messenger! Convey everything revealed to you from your Lord. If you do not, then you have not delivered His message." [Al-Ma'idah:67]

Since prophet Muhammad (ï·º) was the last Messenger so after him, Muslims have the duty to convey the message of Holy Qur'an to others till eternity.

Prophet Muhammad (ï·º) on HAJJATUL WADA (Sermon of last haj) said: "(You should) convey on my behalf even if it is one verse."
