What is anger ? How to control anger in Islam ?

"A tradition (hadeeth) on the authority of Abu Huraira R states that once a person addressed prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) saying, "Bequeath me a precept." He answered, "Do not let anything make you angry." But that person made repeated pleas for a bequeath, but everytime, prophet (ﷺ) gave the same reply." [BUKHARI]

What is anger ?

Anger is a normal feature of human temperament. A person becomes angry when he is prevented by doing what he likes, or is made to do something he dislikes, or some incident is contrary to the person's temperament. In this situation, anger is aroused and there is a flare-up and a confrontation ensues with whoever tries to stop him. Through anger, he tries to prevail upon the opposition till whatever is wished or said or is changed does not remain contrary to his liking. The more intense the like or dislike, the more intense is the anger.

How to control anger by Islamic means ?

Anger is a normal temperament. It cannot be blocked but can be reined in or controlled. The holy Qur'an, speaking of the qualities of MUTTAQEEN (Pious people) says: "suppress anger and forgive people" [Aal Imran:134]

It means that anger should not prod you to lose control, to use unbecoming language and to take revenge. In the state of anger, sense of proportion and balance is totally lost and the mind is completely overwhelmed by emotions. Angers affects ability to think and the angry person utters sheer nonsense, which is below a person's dignity and his self respect.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "Listen! Indeed, anger is like a brazier of fire in the heart of human being. Have you not seen it in his (angry person's) red eyes and swollen veins?" [TIRMIZI]. Consequently he loses Honor and respect in the society. Later, he regrets and feels ashamed and often he has even to suffer severe loss in terms of life and property.

Sometimes a person, for some reason, temporarily suppresses his anger but at a later stage, on getting a chance, takes revenge. It is because of this that Allah has not merely ordained that anger be controlled and suppressed, but  has further insisted on overlooking and forgiveness because Allah calls this quality or attribute of the MUTTAQUEEN (pious people).

Two most effected Ways to get rid of anger

Beloved prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "When anger is aroused in anyone of you, he should sit down if he standing; if this does not reduce his anger then he should lie down." [Abu Dawood, Ahmad]

On other occasion, prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "Anger is due to Shaitanic influence and Shaitan was created out of fire and water is used to extinguish fire. Therefore, if any amongst you becomes angry, he should perform WUDU (Ablution)." [ABU Dawood]
