Bribery in Islam | Explanation and Precautions

Bribery in Islam

What is Bribery ?

Bribe is a thing, which is given in order to suppress the right of someone else. For eg: A person gives some money to a judge so that the judge may pronounce a judgement in his favour. Amount thus given to the judge is a bribe. Bribe is HARAM (prohibited) in Islam. Allah has forbidden it.

"And do not devour one another's property by unlawful means, nor use it as bribe for the judges , so that you may  swallow Knowingly a part of the property of others sinfully."

[Al Baqrah]

To give money to obtain what is of one's own right, does not come under the definition of bribe though generally it is also known as bribe. So the undesirable part of giving such money is that you even encourage a wrong practice. For example, pension is a genuine right. But the amount will not  get released unless you pay some tips to the concerned officials. such officials are illegally making money. Money given to them comes under the definition of bribe. Attempt should be made to make use of proper channels to get justice.

Why to avoid bribery ?

Giver of bribe cause to usurp others right and this is oppression. It creates hatred, causes quarrels and create disturbance in the society.

Taker of bribe takes money in illegal manner and which he does not deserve. It is haram and such income has no BARAKAH (growth). He becomes a party to the oppression by depriving rightful person of his just right. Therefore both has been cursed.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As: The Messenger of Allah (ï·º) cursed the one who bribes and the one who takes bribe.

[ABU DAWOOD, IBN MAJA]

Precautions

As a precaution, prophet Muhammad (ï·º) has also forbidden us from all such things, which may become a bribe. We should refrain from accepting all such gifts which may resemble a bribe.

Bribery and corruption are the reasons for creating the division between the rulers and the people. This leads to injustice and if not curtailed in initial stages, it will ultimately lead to the destruction of the society.

Hence, it becomes the duty of every one to stop this dangerous disease from spreading further. It is also reported that prophet Muhammad (ï·º) has cursed the middle man who co ordinates between the giver and the taker of bribe.
